Bullets v Breakers Dec 27
The USp foul is obviously new, and I lost interest for a few years until a couple of years ago.
“Contact by the defensive player from behind or laterally on an
opponent in an attempt to stop the fast break.
There has to be contact which is designed to stop a fast break. Clearly this contact didn't happen because it didn't stop the fast break.”
I take it the first sentence is a direct quote. Any sport is hard to officiate based on seeing the action in real time. But adding “in an attempt to” adds a whole new level of difficulty. How is a ref supposed to read the INTENT of a player. It require mind reading to be accurate and reliable. Just because the fast break wasn’t there, doesn’t mean there was no intent. Based on that definition, the ref has to call the USpF regardless of the outcome. AFL does that with the “advantage” rule, sometimes delaying the call until they see if there is an advantage.
It just makes a difficult job even harder.
Remove “in an attempt to stop the fast break” and you’d remove that layer. Then FIBA might need to decide on a certain angle behind which it’s an auto USpF

There was no foul on Patterson, just great trapping and he clearly grabbed Abercrombie’s arm with a clear path to the hoop and no one in front. Refs got that 100% right and even Patterson would agree after watching tape, he would want that exact same call if the shoe was on the other foot.
NZ have fought through a lot of adversity this season and it seems to have only bought the team together and they’ve found a way to grind out tough wins. Even if they don’t make the playoffs they’ll have a big say in who does.
Dan Shamir silencing a lot of critics now he has 90% of his team healthy.

Playoffs race much more interesting.
Only Illawarra gone.
Only Sydney and Perth safe.

Exactly - the only shocking thing about that play was the refs getting it right for once last night.

It was the Cam Oliver turnover to David Barlow. Machado was back for Cairns, so no clear path.

Late 4th. Mitch pressured DJ forced a TOThe only Newbill turnover in the fourth was the dunk attempt that slipped out of his hands and sailed out of bounds.

The reason NZ will make playoffs is because Webster is NOT there. They won't want him back

Maybe Breakers can buy out Webster’s China contract if they do make the Finals.

Breakers will make playoffs

Refs are refs, calls go both ways. Brisbane shit in there own nest for about the fourth time this year. To much reliance on Paterson and a few of there locals are not as good as they think they are.

I'm as vocal as anyone re: hating on the USF, but that was a pretty easy one to call. Also don't think Patterson was fouled at all when he lost the ball, looked clean on the replay.

That was a blatant clear path foul and would have been called as such in every league in the world including the NBA.

That's the second time in three years the Breakers have won in Brisbane despite never holding a lead.

Sobey with hero ball down the stretch lost the game for Brisbane, get an import point guard. Patterson looked like he was fouled on the last play but should never have been in that position.

The terrible fade-away jumper from Sobey the possession before just as much to blame I think.

Oh my!!!! Brisbane found a way to lose. Great shot by Hopson but who would have thought Manar Patterson could conjure up a way for us to win.

Vintage Bullets collapse.
Breakers still in a position to make the top 4, shame Webster pissed off to China.

didn't even notice a change to the perth jersey.
To me it is slightly uglier than the usual one due to the disembodied Sylvester heads surrounding the neck. Would a lot of people even know that they're supposed to be Sylvester even from close up? Probably not.

Richard Clarke has left Brisbane mid season, do they have culture issues? Someone please warn the Bullets about accepting free drinks in Perth.
NZ starting to find some form which coincides with some consistency in their playing group.
Hopefully both squads can turn up healthy and the refs can let the players decide the outcome.
NZ by 8.
