WNBL Finals

never underestimate Tolo - she held USA's no. 1 tall Griner a few years ago and was doing well at the Sparks until her ACL

Years ago

Russell had a tremendous season overall, but yeah Tolo had her number in the GF series. Adding that reliable mid range jumper has made her more of a weapon offensively too. She's had a great last couple of months and I'm stoked for her (and the Opals).

Years ago

I'm far from a Molloy fan, but when the 3rd-best roster finishes in 3rd place that doesn't strike me as a reason to sack a coach. I mean at least the Boomers beat Canberra in a playoff game. Southside couldn't do that and you don't hear too many calls to sack Chambers (and no should there be - she's a great coach). Melbourne have had some very flaky seasons but I thought this season their results were pretty much in line with their talent.
Canberra has legit international-caliber stars in Epoupa, Nurse, Griffin & Tolo. That's always going to be tough to beat.

Years ago
Perthworld I'm assuming that you mean Molloy is a coach who continually has star players and yet never wins a grand final series!!!!!

Correct. AND he retains employment despite of it. Amazing.

Was a great game of hoops showcasing Australian women's basketball.

Years ago

Wow, Capitals win their ninth title matching the Wildcats but have done so within a much shorter time frame. So consistent.

Shout out to my guy Guy Molloy who's also super consistent but in a different way.

Well done to the Caps, a great organisation. Anyone lashing out at Tolo is way off the mark. One of the most respected players going around.

Caps seem to be a lot of peoples favourite team

Clydesdale is a liability. Blicavs too with her shooting, lucky she can rebound.

Nurse is a superstar. Canberra won both those finals games because Southside turned the ball over and were unlucky enough for Nurse to end up with the ball and sink a three. Epoupa very good also. It's flogs like Tolo and Froling that put a bitter taste in my mouth. Tolo just seems like a less melodramatic version of Cambage. I'd much rather see the likes of O'Hea with a championship under her belt than either of those two.

And GOD can we please never have Suzy commentate another game. Utterly painful.

Nice combo of the refs wanting Canberra to win and Southside losing it on turnovers just like last week, to give Canberra the win.

how do Canberra do it all the time ? - city of 500,000 but deliver all the time - year in year out they get it right. Well done.

I got Southside by 8

Years ago

Game 1 of the grand final series, which should be a good one.

Tip-off time is exactly the same as the Cairns-Wildcats game, which is a genius piece of scheduling by the league. Well done.

Southside will be given all they can handle by ... their mystery opponent today

Not pony, why’’. Lol.

Yes, you can’t fatham pony they don’t have replay. Maybe not enough people making complaints.
Ive always seen lj as a lazy person, I know she has a business major but I’m not sure that means anything these days.

Years ago

Barely better than nothing, given the awful success rate of the streaming.

But the main thing I don't get is why the stream doesn't get archived somewhere so you can view it later. Right now it is live or nothing. For people in WA in particular the time difference is a killer. But for any given game there's gotta plenty of people who might be unable to watch it live but would catch the game later on if they could. It seems like such a fundamental thing to me. The time and expense is all in getting the telecast done. Once they've done it they're limiting how many people can view it.

Does anyone think the wnbl will lift there game next season? I’m a bit sceptical.
Really disappointed with the lack of improvement on last year.

I liked how nurse glared at Cunningham after the final free throws.

Years ago
Didn't care who won but felt Nurse didn’t need to take that last shot with 4 seconds left.

Why not? It's a 40 minute game and you're allowed to play all 40.
In game 2 with the game well in the bag, Garrick took a shot with 2 seconds left.
Last night with the game over, the Boomers could have dribbled out the clock and ended the game but opted to put up a shot.
Nurse had every right to put one up afterwards.
Years ago
The best two teams all year progressed to the grand final.

Indeed.
Melbourne good, but just too streaky. Caps have reliable star power and it got the job done yet again.

Boomers had their chances last night. Tight game with a 4 point margin when Garrick somehow missed the easiest layup you'll ever see, Epoupa buries a 3 at the other end, and that was effectively game over. As a team they can still hold their heads pretty high IMO. Magbegor will be better for the experience.

Grand Final series should be excellent.

Looked like Garrick was making an elbowing motion like someone on Canberra was throwing elbows and Goriss looked unimpressed with what she was saying. All just speculation though and the two best teams ultimately made it through.

The best two teams all year progressed to the grand final.

Kudos to Melbourne and Adelaide, who were brilliant in defeat. What a quality WNBL finals series we have in 2020.

Thought Garrick was a fair player until I saw what happened at the end.

Anonymous
Years ago

What a disgusting display from the Canberra crowd, refs played a big role in the first half letting so many things fly by from Canberra, travels and carry’s galore from caps, and those two quick 3 seconds calls on Ezi , yet Tolo and Griffin were camping most of the night

Anonymous
Years ago

Poor form from Garrick to be complaining afterwards. Melbourne never had the lead. They simply weren't the better side.

A semi-final exit is reasonable from Melbourne, who aren't as stacked as Canberra.

On Molloy, he is a good coach and will be there next year!

Goodbye molloy.

Garrick thilthy with Goriss at the end?

Not a good look for the WNBL to have players expressing their negative views on a tribunal result. Do WNBL issue out fines for such comments? I know they do in the AFL.

The WNBL agrees that it's not a good look.
Two Capitals stars face financial sanctions for several juicy social media posts that questioned the WNBL’s ruling on a controversial semi-final scuffle.
Canberra on Tuesday night confirmed to foxsports.com.au that it’d received a penalty notice from the league after centre Marianna Tolo and forward Keely Froling publicly took umbrage at the $250 fine handed to Boomer Sophie Cunningham by the Incident Review Panel (IRP).
Tolo and Froling have been cited for breaching the ‘public criticism’ rule and issued a please explain. They and the club have 48 hours to respond to the WNBL.

Hope Boomers wipe the floor with Canberra, can’t believe I’m actually writing that, as Molloy doesn’t deserve the win , but Canberra are pathetic the way they always cry foul, when in fact they are some of the worst offenders, Froling grinds so many people gears-

No surprises anywhere here. Froling is the biggest pain in the a*se in the whole league, very closely followed by Cunningham. Both as bad as each other.

WNBL stars fume as Cunningham dodges ban despite high contact charge
Canberra Capitals players Marianna Tolo and Keely Froling have hit out at the WNBL after the league's review panel didn't suspend Melbourne Boomers WNBA import Sophie Cunningham for Wednesday night's semi-final decider.

A fair few tweets out there, including from Froling & Tolo. It's a pity it takes something like this to get a bit of WNBL engagement on twitter.

FWIW I still think both players share the blame for the incident, and more to the point I don't think it's worthy of a suspension anyway.

Don’t like Cunningham at all as a player, nor Froling or Rocco for that matter, not a Boomers or Caps fan, but when you look at the crap Rocci gets away with, the dramas Froling brings( and always has) and put Cunningham into that mix, Cunningham doesn’t start it, but she sure as hell has the last word. she’s agro big time and not one to mess with.

Canberra have a reputation for wanting teams that challenge them to be reviewed and players suspended, shame other teams don’t do the same to them

But they also seem to pick players that like to play the victim card, those players are the ones that hang around ( since Gorris took over that is) Graff was a way better coach

LOL at all the outraged d*ck pullers and their conspiracy theories. Cunningham did a dirty play, deal with it.

Almost guarantee that the Cunningham haters are either or the Canberra journo mentioned above or the Canberra radio flog; they know who they are.

Canberra also flops and whinges to the refs' tens times more than any other team in the comp; every player does it in every game.

Anonymous
Years ago

#883, funnily enough, this video was posted by the opposition, in this case, South Carolina. All these haters are on this forum are either one or all of the same Canberra members who are hating on twitter. Get a life, this isn't AFL no one cares. You are clearly worried that Cunningham will have a huge game; if you know about her stats you will know she has her best games in a hostile environment; the environment you are trying to create for her.

Years ago

Slap on the wrist and move on, hopefully. Certainly not worth a suspension.

Nurse ain’t dirty fool.

Years ago

There are enough prima-donnas in the NBL getting rewarded for head-throws, acting and flopping - why shouldn't the girls in the WNBL get in on the act as well??

Anonymous
Years ago

Cunningham should be suspended. She already did one flagrant foul against Canberra this year.

That was a retaliation foul after Rocci wiped her out and nothing was called. Rocco gets away with so many fouls if you pay attention to her game.

This game( situation) Froling instigated it ( pretty normal for her) by trying to walk through the Melbourne group with elbows held ridged and high and then deliberately connecting with Cunningham, who brought her hand up “under” Froling elbow, to which Froling went fir the Oscars move of the offended head flip, when no contact was actually made. all Froling could give the Oscars a run fir their money when it comes to trying to draw a foul, have done it since juniors, girls used to scream at the drop of a hat lol.

Cunningham is certainly a bit of a hot head, but flagrant and unsportsmanlike she’s not.

if Crystal Langhorne had not been injured - Adelaide would have been right up there. Adelaide did a great job considering a couple of key injury setbacks. That home game against Southside showed how good they could be.

Dog act from Cunningham

I'd say dumb more than dog act. I can understand retaliating after getting an elbow to the face.
Will add some spice to game 3.

Not sure what to make of that match. Canberra's hearts really didn't look in it for most of the game. No one was particularly effective for them until the game was in its death throes and Nurse & Griffin started to score freely.
I expect it will be a very different story in front of their home crowd in game 3 though. I got a bit of a rope-a-dope vibe from them today.
Melbourne would be concerned about how trash their offence is whenever Lindsay Allen is not out there running things. They need to come up with some set plays other than aimlessly running clock and then jacking up a desperation shot at the end of it. When they're rolling like they were in that first half they are fun to watch though. Ezi & Cayla need to both stay well away from foul trouble in game 3.

Dog act from Cunningham

George won't be able to defend very hard for the rest of this game due to foul trouble.
Makes a change from the usual reason of apathy.

Years ago

Boomers set themselves up perfectly in that first half. Great style of play.
I still don't trust them not to choke it away though. I'm hoping they keep it going and we get a game 3.
