Latest on 36ers head coach, global search

confirmed

"Smyth told them from Day 1 he wasn't interested and went as far as contacting media outlets to tell them to stop using his name, or so the story goes

This is the same guy that also turned down the director of basketball job with the 36ers according to some people."

991,

1. Creek has credited Joey, correct. Having seen how he coaches and how hard Creek has pushed himself though I don't buy it. To be fair, Joey definitely allowed Creek to thrive as they had a good relationship, but that doesn't mean he's the cause of Creek's improvement. I'm confident another coach could have achieved the same result, if not better because Creek has always had the determination to be elite.

2. Resorting to name-calling because you can't put forth a cohesive argument? Nice.

Seebohm was well-respected coach before he won a junior gold medal and drew praise from the entire basketball community. Then he was given a WNBL head coaching gig. That seems like a logical progression based on tangible accomplishments, rather than just assistant roles that seem to be at least somewhat the result of connections in the case of Caporn.

Experience doesn't mean shit if you coach to a worse capacity than other candidates. I don't have an opinion of him, but Stacker has his name thrown around a bit, and his vast experience doesn't mean much to most.

3. I'm not the same anon from earlier in the thread saying there were heaps of coaches out there better than Caporn... I'm just pointing out that there are highly competent coaches in Australia that, if interested, potentially have a better claim to the role. I also gave you two examples of coaches I've been impressed by, so I don't get what your point is here.

4. Do you have any inside knowledge of this or are you implying this is how it went down? Because I've been told differently by people close to the situation. I also don't get why Smythe would need to 'save face'. Smythe doesn't need the job: he makes a very cushy living by doing public speaking gigs, and not being successful for the position really isn't an indictment on him - just a reflection of the other candidates.

I don't think the 36ers have clout to sign good Australian players at this current time.

It's all well and good to point to a youngster in Giddey who will likely be a one and done. He's not a step towards the finals picture.

Years ago

Of course Forde is going to publicly say Caporn is going to do a good job.

There's a lot of people who will say that Caporn is going to do a good job, but privately are shaking their heads in disbelief at the 36ers choice.

To be clear I'm not suggesting those are Forde's private views, I can't speak for him.

I hope Caporn is a success for the sake of the club, but there is nothing in Caporn's coaching history that suggests he will be, nothing at all.

Anonymous
Years ago

Not sure with McMains but happen to speak with Forde as he is back in Perth. He said he was interviewed and made the shortlist of candidates, but told mid last week that he wasn't successful. He reckons he was confident Caporn would get the job too - and gave him much praise that he would do a good job of it.

So much praise for McMains and Forde over the last few years and they gomwith Caporn, a guy that has achieved very little.

964, short of the international crisis, there's a lot I disagree with your post, or is just wrong.

1. Joey's tenure coincided with Creek's prime. That doesn't mean Joey was personally responsible for that improvement. The fact that young players have improved under him is as much a sign of natural mental and physical maturity as anything Joey might have done.

2. The anti-Caporn sentiment is that he's an underwhelming choice. He hasn't coached for very long, hasn't accomplished much, and hasn't left a lasting impression like, say, Seebohm did on the women's side of international competition, or experienced coaches have.

3. Regarding a list: we don't know who applied. Most journalists have gotten it wrong so far e.g. Boti with Fearne. NBL assistants (McCains, Forde etc.) have more of a claim, except for having a relationship with Giddey. I'd be disappointed to learn if the 36ers' worldwide search didn't include reaching out to those kind of candidates.

4. How was Smythe told to piss off when the 36ers approached him, and Smythe turned down potential opportunities?

"Te rangi was a waste at Brisbane,"

Agreed, but only this last season. And that was more of a recruitment issue rather than Te Rangi under-performing. With Singler & Braun in the team, hard for him to get mins. Wasn't he best 6th man last year? Reckon he'd actually be a very good prospect as he'd want to re-establish his value in the league and, with another year to seal his spot for Tokyo, with the Tall Blacks, too.

Years ago

Which other coaches and players are available. Te rangi was a waste at Brisbane, which other players might fit the bill. United and Sydney might have a few looking for more opportunities.

Years ago

Few, if any, of the mentioned coaches will be considered as one of pre requisites for the job is ncaa experience.

Years ago

Got Creek but took Wright to hone him into player.
As the the head hunting list, in case you haven't watched the news there's been a bit of a international crisis. Who would be head hunted in Australia that isn't contracted now, Gaze? So those that applied is your list, if you didn't apply then who are these amazing coaches, still waiting for you to name 3.
At least Smythe got told to piss off quick.

Name 3 good coaches that you know have come out and said they were interested? Give us a Woj bomb genius!

Years ago

There's plenty of coaching talent that would be willing to coach the 36ers to get into the head coaching ranks.

You said it all in your response, you wanted a name so you're taking Caporn. This is how you end up with underperforming coaches.

Anonymous
Years ago

Maybe we have to think of the other way. Who would want to coach Sixers at the moment. No real young talent to build with, aging DJ, one of the biggest scandals ever with Joey (that has only gone quiet because of Corona), unknown future for league, weak Aussie dollar so overseas free agents are taking huge pay cut.
Overseas coaches would be ruled out. Who else is left, not much. So biggest name is really Caporn, no-one else is stupid enough which in itself could be a worry though.
On reflection I'm going to give him a go. Marty Clarke was just a really shit coach. Our first year we should stuggle, second aim for playoffs, third be in contention. If we're really bad after year 2 then it was failed experiment.

Years ago

You can compare Clarke and Caporn. In fact in Clarke's era it was easier to turn a team around as there wasn't such a big discrepancy in talent between teams. No better evidence of that than the last to grand final turn-around under Joey the very next season with the only real change being Gary Ervin.

Caporn has done nothing. Got a gig at St Mary's as a AC, then a plum COE role. When you talk to him he almost seems self aware of how inexperienced he is.

Why do we pick up another L plate coach. I love the fact that Grant has bought the team and pumped money into it but man does he have no idea in terms of basketball operations.

Anonymous
Years ago

Other clubs in other codes are cutting staff everywhere, but looks like Sixers have only shed 2, excluding coach who's already gone. Makes sense.

Years ago

Caporn is going to be a disaster.

Can't believe after Marty we are doing the same thing by hiring Caporn. Caporn's results have been worse than what Clarke had at the AIS.

Assuming they are happy to let Drmic go because there’s better aussies they are confident of getting is probably thinking too much of the 36ers

Why is KB seen as succession plan, been there how long, if he was viewed as that then he would have gotten job. Don't think he'll do a Cooks at Illawarra and stay there no matter what. Keep Teys, the other 2 only been there this season and did stuff all. Plus it could attract Motum, played here before, mates with Teys and probably wants out of Europe now with young family and situation over there.
Drmic was one of Joey's guys, smart thing would be to stay, doubt there's better opportunities elsewhere. Let Froling go, will be out of league soon or 3rd big in rotation somewhere.

Anonymous
Years ago

Not sure CJ Massingham right direction. With KB have vast experience and succession plan. So double barrel benefits caporn hopefully can attract young Aust and dev. Need to retain some experience but squad looks too mature with white dillion treys.
Why does drmic want out. Opportunity to establish himself in starting 5. Approaching his peak and new coach should give him the confidence he seem to seeking and not receiving. Expectstions were too high. Keen for new generalional sixers to emerge.

Years ago

Stacker as assistant?

Anonymous
Years ago

If it's Caporn I wonder what his staff will look like. Will they continue the clean out and KB on his bike or keep him as a bit of continuity. Or keep Golley that spoke out on behalf of players.
Or does he go with young staff of his choosing or experienced ex coach.
Would like to see if we could get a CJ or someone else that's been assistant for a while and has experience of different systems. But as a rookie head may have some job security issues.

Reputation doesn’t mean you are any good, good luck to Adelaide if Adel and Humphries go there, they might score 100 every game it’s the 120 they let in that hurts.

Years ago

"Adel is a poor version of Noi"

Adel has had a stint with an NBA team and made a Boomers camp, while Noi was barely good enough to start on an NBL team. Care to explain that?

Years ago

Humphries and Adel are G league reserves, they don’t play. JVG in charge now so I’m not surprised. Adel is a poor version of Noi and Kelly could not find a lot minutes for him in Cairns.
Imports and quality Australians coming home could be good if the virus takes a lot longer to go as the European market could be down. On the flip side imports get paid in US dollars and the Australian dollar is so low you need double to get them here.

You are missing teys. I rather keep him. Thinking new coach needs to make call on froling. A talent unit his size not something that's like abundant. A new coach my well invibrate froling to get super fit motivated. Once the horse has bolted its likely not gunna be same horse. Teys please the guy probably had his best season last year. May not be super star but is super glue for team. As hard as my nails. We need dependability.

Anonymous
Years ago

Quit on 2 colleges and effectively quit on Sixers this year, see ya later. Prefer someone like Pineau who works his arse off than someone with supposedly more talent.

Years ago

Froling has talent but thinks he’s nba material, might be but you need work ethic at it’s highest level which seems to be even missing at nbl level. Big men with talent are hard to find though.

Anonymous
Years ago

Why have we given up on froling. With new coach comes new oportunities. He showed enough at times agreed under joey and did appear to be disinterested. Easy cures and have a big powerful unit to build from foundations. Ok some might say he needs to work hard. Exactly simple fix work hard. A lover of the big h. Can't loose this big fish. Be a case of another one that bit us on bum and big h will certainly take a mouthful.

Years ago

Humphries is made for Adelaide, over rated over paid player. Perfect match.

Years ago

Omg if that's what we got to work - getting a coach be like getting a cab in hindley street on free piss up night. Good luck. The wheels on the bust seem to be flat.. dead set flat.

Years ago

Dillon, White and Teys aren't signed for next season yet. All of those players including Randle, DJ, McVeigh & Kyei have options for next season that can't be waived or exercised until the week before free agency begins.

Technically the only players officially under contract right now are Mudronja and Giddey.

Anonymous

Fark, those signed players are really shit!!!

Anonymous
Years ago

Just shows Botis level now with that crap. Would say even Joey's harshest critics, prior to leaks, would have preferred him over Clarke.

Years ago

6? Randle won't be ready in time for next season.

Years ago

Now that this Asterisk season is finished, we need to focus on the next business at hand.

I was listening to Boti's podcast this morning and I heard him say the words Marty Clarke with Adam Caporn and rebuild.

I don't want Marty Clarke 2.0.
I lived Marty Clarke 1.0 and it made me almost want to stop supporting the team and follow over 50's women's ten pin bowling.

Please Grant...you obviously have the budget, use it wisely. Get a decent coach with credentials, get Scott Machado and we will have a super base to work with.

Years ago

What happened last time they tried to sign a guy whose name they couldn't spell?

Years ago

Get Damien Martin in at least as an assistant.

Anonymous

Gutted if not KB. Seems pool is small. So give to a well cred local with clear guidelines to rebuild with priority on local. Local SA /Local Aus.
