Scott Machado and Taipans agree to 2 year extension

Some people apply for citizenship but are deemed ineligible.

That doesn't say he is "more or less naturalised", it just says he's filled out all the forms and submitted them. So he's not waiting for the paperwork to be finalised, he's waiting for the point where he is deemed eligible under the criteria.

I can't help wondering if Cairns won't be completely screwed by the salary cap measures for next season.

Dazz Cairns is a immunity based club struggling to compete in the NBL. They do a good job and with the Covid effect in place they will struggle. All the WAWankers are talking about adding Cotton etc. No tourists in Cairns ='s no Snakes. There needs to to be a firm enforceable cap (won't happen) and an import limit. 2. Future Stars is gone so 2 it is.

Yeah lets not forget that fact.

All clubs had a chance on Didi an others, just didn’t bother.

Didi was good for the league, and draft and stash will be the future of the NS program, but the sudden change of rules of the fly though after the Kings approached the NBL had everyone asking questions considering he'd normally be an import.

Naturalisation is nothing new, if a player loves the NBL and Australia so much they want to get their citizenship, well that's just a credit to the team and the NBL.

Years ago

Machado will sign with the Wildcats if Kay doesn't resign.

Years ago
Didi was good for the league as well but that didn't stop all Perth fans crying when they thought they were a chance of getting beat. Go with the cards your dealt and get on with it.

You will find fans across the NBL questioned why Didi was considered a Next Start when he was ineligible for the draft (the original requirement for Next Stars).

As long as all other teams can have draftees as Next Stars, I'm down with that.

Agreed with above too ^

Good players naturalising is good for the league, pretty simple isn't it?

Years ago

Once again a team-specific thread gets derailed by Wildcats waffle.

Is Cotton even eligible to naturalize.

So a naturalised Cotton and 2 imports. WOW. Simply wow. Perth continues to overspend and get that W.

If you are concerned about Cotton plus 2 imports, you must have lost your bundle when you saw Lisch with Ware, Tate, Taylor and Lazada.

Again 'overspending' does not guarantee wins or Championships.
Years ago

Perth tax bill would be huge if some of those line ups are your team.

Show them the money they will come (at whatever the cost is to Perth).

I recall the Wildcats had Tiny, Fisher, Ricky, Cal, Crawford,Redhage and so many others I forget. All either naturalised or imports. Nothings changed in 25+ years that's for sure.

Years ago

The talk of Cotton as an import has me wondering are there any ex NBL imports that could be taking out citizenship and become more valuable to an NBL team?

Would they be too old if say a Gary Ervin at 36 suddenly gained citizenship and could play 15 minutes/game?

Years ago

If the season is delayed it works in our favour timing wise re: Cotton citizenship. So two new stud imports is the ceiling. Imagine that along with Kay staying.

Years ago

I think Sydney will need a 5 man if Bogut doesn’t return. Taylor should be a reasonable costing point guard and spend big on a 5 man. Didi would be useful as a next star as well.

Years ago

Cam Oliver must be a priority if not then Newbill.

Well done to Cairns for getting Machado (Santamaria has been saying its a matter of time for weeks), he makes Cairns an instant playoff team.

Perth - Cotton.
Cairns - Machado.
Adelaide? - Over to you Sixers

Mathiang would suit all sides but not happening unless all euro leagues stop. He’s on huge coin over there.

He was close to the best player in the league last season.

Will be interesting to see if he can replicate that shooting form again.

Not sure if it's been mentioned in here, but apparently this isn't a done deal yet.

NBL press release stating this is not a done deal

The Cairns Taipans have issued a statement indicating that negotiations remain ongoing with star point guard Scott Machado despite reports from media that he had re-signed with the Club on a multi-year contract.
Cairns released the following statement in relation to Machado and other players from their NBL20 campaign..
Despite a number of media reports, the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans are yet to formalise an agreement with former point guard Scott Machado at this stage.
While ongoing conversations with his agent have been positive and Machado has openly expressed his desire to return, there is no finalised contract given the unknown dates of the upcoming seasons.
The Taipans are at various stages with a number of players in regards to the 2020-21 NBL season, and look forward to sharing the news at a more appropriate time.
In 31 games last season, Machado posted averages of 16.6 points and 7.7 assists per game, leading the Snakes from the bottom of the table the season prior to the finals as well as being named in the All-NBL First Team.

Wow this is great news!!! Things are starting to look up again after a worrying couple of weeks with good players opting out.

I would like to see them keep Newbill and try and secure an aussie center. Assuming that Oliver isn't returning of course.

Wonder if a "franchise tag" type scenario could be created to assist clubs to keep these types of players away from being poached.

Fantastic news!

It's good to see a player who's a hit with the locals stay longer than a year and is not successfully poached.

I'm all for player opportunities, but one thing that has been missing for a long while is the player-fan connection. You only get that if 1) the player is a good local that's at your club (Mahersy type), 2) the player has been at your club for many years that it becomes like home (Davis type) or 3) Import which captures the crowds imagination (Farley type). As a 36ers fan, i've used 36ers as examples.

Perth clearly have that with Cotton. It's wonderful. The fairytale type year of Cairns is building that with Machado.

Part of what is preventing this is a bit of 1) Historically Europe would poach our quality players [this happens less during LK era which is good] and 2) Poorer club finds gem player, Rich club steals said gem player for better $$$, decent chance rich club doesnt get chemistry/roles right, that player doesn't have the same magic

Wonder if a "franchise tag" type scenario could be created to assist clubs to keep these types of players away from being poached. The method of doing so would have to be more carrot than stick - can't be denying opportunities within NBL, no real way to prevent Euro opportunities.

Years ago

Let's be honest, who wouldn't want to play with Machado? Surely it would be an attractive carrot to dangle in front of free agent having someone that will get you the ball in the right spots. I can't wait to see what he does next with a full season here under his belt to understand the interpretations of our referees.

Someone mentioned Froling as backup centre, is that Harry or Sam ?

I don't think centre is that weak if they are injury free as the added opportunity could bring out the best in them. But I'd still like another option to play some minutes at centre if foul trouble or injuries happen, has Majok Deng bulked up at all?

Now before people use size of population as an excuse, just look at Tassie.

You could say "its a weak age group" but the problem is the results are slipping for SA across boys/girls and metro/country.

SA has almost slipped down to WA and is way behind TAS.

What are the problems?

This isn't meant to be a NG/JB bashing. The problems start right from the top!

Only a few years ago these results would have been unacceptable. How accountable are the leaders in the sport to achieve their KPIs, when the sport is governed by volunteers who are not accountable.

Vic - 22/2
NSW - 17/7
QLD - 16/8
TAS - 7/5
SA - 9/15
WA - 7/17
ACT - 1/11
NT - 0/12
