How far the league has come - in the last few year
I'm sure Fiddes has the passion, he has been and still is heavily involved in basketball, he is however a business man and at the end of the day he is only in anything for the $$$. So setting up a budget team, spending half the cap and cutting costs in every way possible was understandable from a business perspective.
However success is the only way to get sponsors and fans on board and you are right in saying that if you dont at least go close to the rest of the league your results will reflect that.
I wonder though did he ever have a long term plan? Or was is intention only ever to get a budget team/operation together and hope for a big time sponsorship deal/lucky success - to make some money, would he have always bailed after putting some initial $$ on the table (rumours have it he didnt actually put that much out there anyway, was more a figure head).

Their philosphy worked well didn't it? That's why 2 years later they still went under. The Giants were part of a League that competes at the highest level in Australia. With a budget of weetbix for breakfast and rolls and salad from the supermarket for lunch, how do you attract the best players to your team, not to mention the knee crushing experience of travelling 9 hours on a bus. 2002 was also a time when the salary cap was at around $1m. How do you compete spending half of the cap? You've got to spend money to make money. The success of the team on the court was a better indicator of success than keeping a tight fisted budget. The problem is that Peter Fiddes probably didn't have the money nor the passion for the sport to ride the storm at the time.
PS had to laugh at the players bringing their own bowl and spoon. Reminds me of Kindergarten.
